Television review: Howards End (2017)

In Howards End, the lives of three very different Edwardian families become entangled: the Schlegel siblings are intellectual young adults, the Wilcox family rich capitalists and Leonard and Jacky Bast belong to the lower-class working poor. Margaret Schlegel, the eldest sibling, befriends an ailing Ruth Wilcox. When Ruth dies, she leaves Margaret the family home of Howards End through a note scribbled on a piece of paper. Her widower Henry, decides not to honour this wish, but later becomes romatically involved with none other than Margaret. Meanwhile, idealistic younger sister Helen Schlegel keeps trying to help the Basts, but unintentionally makes things worse.

Book review: The third sister

In Sense and Sensibility, Margaret, the youngest Dashwood sister, is only a young teenager, but witness to the pain her sisters are suffering for love. Now, at 17, she is the only daughter living at home with her mother. She wants more of life then the monotony of Barton Park and playing nursemaid to the Middleton children, but is also hestitant in socializing with men, cautious of making the same mistakes as her sisters.

My time at L´Abri

In January, I spent almost 4 weeks at the Christian study community L'Abri. For me, it was a retreat after 5 years of working really hard at my PhD. A time to reset and create room in my mind for other things than just work. I had a really good time, enjoying the lovely people, the good conversations, the quiet and the great cooking ;-)

Television review: Indian Summers season 1

During the stifling Indian summers, the British rule moved from New Delhi to Simla, in the foothills of the Himalayas. At the start of the summer of 1932, Cynthia, owner of the famous Royal Simla Club, is readying her establishment for the season. Private secretary to the Viceroy, Ralph Whelan, welcomes his sister Alice, who has left England for mysterious reasons. Also moving to Simla are Indian clerk Aafrin and his family, including his British-minded father and his rebellious sister. As the temperatures rise, so will the tensions in this idyllic place, especially when Ralph is attacked by a mysterious gunman at the first night of the season.
