8 Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts (1)

Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts is a weekly blogging event hosted by Bookishly Boisterous. It allows book bloggers (and non-book bloggers) to write about pretty
much anything, bookish or otherwise (i.e. sharing exciting plans for the weekend,
rants on things they've encountered during the week etc.)

For a while now I've been looking for a 'format' to talk a little bit more about real life stuff or just small observati ons and shout-outs that I'd like to make which don't fill a whole post. I think this weekly blogging event is just what I need for that! I hope to make posts like this more often (though perhaps not weekly...)

1. Tomorrow I'm going to visit a traditional country market. There are going to be demo's and workshops of old farming techniques, cooking and crafts, rare animal breeds and lots of stand with interesting traditional products. The weather promises to be good and it all takes place in an open-air museum. I'm really looking forward to it!

2. In two weeks, the kids club I lead at my church is going to start again and with it comes the task of thinking up interesting activities. Do any of you have good crafts or games ideas for girls ages 9-12, preferably doable in about 1 hour tops?

3. Last week I was a bit sad that summer was really over. Students came pouring in to the university where I work, the weekly workmeetings (which I secretly abhor) started again etc. But then this week we had some really good weather and I could smell the fresh smell of autumn in the air and some leaves getting coloured, so now I'm kind of looking forward to autumn as well! (Plus, my sword-fighting classes have started again, that's a big plus!)

4. With the autumn starting also comes the start of the new TV-season and all the promo's that I see around are making me look forward to the return of my favourite shows: Grey's AnatomyOnce Upon a Time and most of all Downton Abbey!

5. Ofcourse the new season of Doctor Who has already started, with a new Doctor as well! Though in general I'm a bit tired of Stephen Moffat's writing, I was quite happy with the first two episodes. The new Doctor promises to be very interesting and him and Clara work together very well, especially in the second ep.

6. I had a really good customer experience this week: I was going back to a department store with a pair of shoes that I bought in April which were already broken. Not even to get money back, but just to make a complaint that I think these (rather expensive) shoes shouldn't wear out so quickly. But I was received very courteously and got a voucher with the complete amount I paid for those shoes! Thumbs up!

7. I recently read a book (The Carpenter's Children by Maggie Bennett) which takes place during WWI. But have a look at the cover: does that model look anyting like she could live in 1914? The hair and top is all wrong!

8. It's already September and I start looking a bit at my progress at my reading challenges. I'm quite dissapointed with myself for having only read 2 classics so far this year when I challenged myself to read 10. I do really like reading classics, but they're often so long and reading them takes so much more time then reading 'modern' novels. And with so many books still on my TBR, well, I guess you know what I mean....

  1. I've found that making bracelets with girls that age is pretty easy and fun. Just get some hemp or thread, beads, and a few weaving patterns (plus scissors and maybe tape or something to hold the bracelet while they make knots), and you're good to go! You could probably find a book on this or patterns online pretty easily, too, and the craft shouldn't take a long time.

I'm very excited for Autumn! It is my favorite season, though. I already started some pumpkin baking, and the past two days have been beautiful and cool here (though it won't last until Autumn, I'm sure). Of course, I work in retail, so this is when we have to start prepping for Christmas. I'm not exactly ready for that.

I know exactly how you feel about classics! They're really my favorite things to read, but I haven't read that many this year, because they take so much longer to read. Chin up! As long as you're still reading and having fun, you're reaching the most important goals, right?

    1. Thanks for the comment! We usually make bracelets or other jewelry once every season. That's one of the perks of having an all-girls club, we can do girly crafts!

We're not yet prepping for Christmas yet, but I've seen the first 'Sinterklaas' candy in the supermarket already (you know about the Dutch tradition of Sinterklaas?)

Definitely, having fun reading is the most important!

    2. I know a little, but I'd never claim to be an expert! I'm seeing mostly jack-o-lantern toys and big bags of fun size candy at the supermarkets here (prep for Halloween)!

  2. Hold the phone! Sword-fighting classes?! You must tell me more about this! Now I'm very intrigued. :D

No game ideas, sorry. I'm always terrible at thinking those things up.... :/

Yay for new TV seasons! As well as good service experiences! And you're completely right. That cover model is definitely all wrong. I so much prefer it when the covers match what's inside.

Also? Where is time going anyway? It's already September? That's craziness! ;)

    1. I second the motion for more discussion on sword-fighting! It just sounds really interesting and immediately makes me think of The Scarlet Pimpernel. :)

    2. Hehe, I also had a discussion with a friend at LiveJournal who wanted to know more about the sword-fighting, so I promised I'd write a post about it soon. I can already say though, it's styled about 400-500 years prior to The Scarlet Pimpernel...

  3. Hit up Pinterest for ideas on games and activities! It's golden.
